The Serpent Mound Celebration
Northwest Portage Walking Museum was an idea that came out of a neighborhood community, the Portage Park Neighborhood Association. A partnership with Chicago Public Art Group and the American Indian Center was formed. Two years later with more partnerships and funders we are excited to announce the first site on the NWPWM will be celebrated on October 14, 2019, Indigenous Peoples Day!
The earthwork will be the first installation of new effigy mounds typology by an indigenous peoples in North America since the founding of the United States. Santiago X the artist, pays significant homage to the ancestral practice of mound building. The goals are to educate the public about the rich cultural history of placemaking and activate the human connection to the river and its importance to the narrative of Chicago’s cultivation as a city.
